I first met Alan when I was about 17. He introduced me to motor racing by taking me to a 24 hour lawnmower race . This is where I realised he was a loon, and knew I’d get on with him really well. He took me to Holland racing , and later to race his v6 Mondeo and then Pick up in the Eurocar days. Memories included Alan having a few bacardis and ripping up £50 notes, while Dan and I rushed round picking up the pieces and sellotaping them back together . On race day, Alan would lie under the car, pretending to work on it while he nursed his hangover . I was mapreader on the way to the tracks, which was really scary, because if I made him take a wrong turning , he would scream a load of expletives .
Racing was always really good fun with Alan, even if he did throw his steering wheel in the middle of Brands in temper , and occasionally want to nut people .
Alan was like a father to me , telling me if Id made wrong life decisions and boyfriend decisions . You always knew where you were with him - what you saw is what you got . I trusted him entirely - he was one of very few men I’d trusted .
As his health deteriorated was still strong, determined to fight it- still rolling about under the car when he felt able . It was horrible to watch a such a strong man get poorly, and even in his last days - he wanted to do what he could to get strong again.
Alan, I miss your cheeky face , your rubbing your hands together , your voice , your laugh , your advice , and just all of you. Whose sweets will I pinch now ?
Love you lots
