Born October 1922 in Kew, christened Doreen Daphne but quickly nicknamed Babs by her brothers. Babs had a wonderful childhood at 97 Strand on the Green, Kew, Chiswick with parents Ellen & Harry & older brothers Jack, Harry & Charlie. Babs was spoilt by her brothers. She loved her first proper job in the Accounts Department of the Barker’s Store, Kensington but was disappointed her first wage packet was not as much as the pocket money she had received from her brothers.
At school Babs must have been good at maths, she had a head for figures & would do the accounts for the family building business.
Babs & best friend Phylis out one Saturday night at a Hammersmith dancehall met Tommy Little & his mate Jim. After courting for 12 months Tom & Babs were married August 1947, Phylis & Jim married a few months later.
After living at Kew for awhile they bought a house in East Ham where her son Don was born.
Babs worked as a domestic cleaner, school dinner lady & in the local bakery. She loved cooking, baking, gardening. Tom & Babs moved down to the coast when Tom retired.
Tom sadly passed away in 2001
Babs had dementia but never forgot her sense of humour, there was rarely a day when she didn’t make Don laugh. They used to wind each other up with Babs normally getting the upper hand, she would then wink at Don – meaning “got you”.
Throughout the years Babs would reminisce about her days in Kew her love for her brothers & family.
