Frances Townsend

I always remember Frances as being a quiet, gentle, softly spoken lady. Usually wearing something she had sewn or knitted for herself! A credit to her dressmaking training after she left school. No wonder she was able to make my sister's wedding dress. Certainly as I recently went through her wardrobe, I was proud of her tailoring as well as dressmaking. Apparently her nickname at college was 'Frogging Fanny' because she was the best as frogging. If you've ever seen it, you will be amazed!

I did visit her whilst housebound in recent years. She told me more and more about her youth. Including her school in Greenwich being bombed in the war, going to the Cygnets Rowing Club in Shepperton (where her father was on the committee and a handyman) for parties and holidays. Apparently the beds were the hardest she ever slept on in her life.

She loved her last home in Hastings Close as it was the longest she had lived anywhere. Almost 40 years I believe. The purchase of a stair lift enabled her to stay there longer. She very much appreciated her neighbours, especially Anne and Jen. Although Anne passed away nearly two years ago, Jen cared for her as she became more and more housebound. A real tower of strength.

Frances was definitely a Christian and enjoyed her church life at ST Richard's, Pagham, belonging to their wives group and also the Women's Institute. All of whom, I am sure, will miss her. As will all her friends and family.
