Mrs Elsie Ward Smith

Mrs Elsie Ward Smith

29.09.1925 - 01.05.2020

Elsie and her late husband Ben moved to Bognor Regis in 1974 having previously lived in Ascot and prior to that, London, where Elsie was born. They met in Nottingham in 1943 where Ben was stationed with the RAF and Elsie, who had been evacuated from London with her family, worked as a seamstress making uniforms for the forces.
Married to Ben in 1948 Elsie had 2 children: Ken and Barbara, 3 grandchildren: Nicola, Suzy and Ben and 5 great grandchildren: Jamie, Ben, Sophie, Isaac and Tom.
Elsie had a great love of gardening and taking part in sports such as cycling, badminton and squash. Later in life Elsie and Ben joined a gym and became regular members exercising 5 times a week and made many friends during the 10 years they attended.
Elsie was a much loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and aunt who will be forever missed by all her family and friends but for whose great love we shall be forever thankful

To my lovely mum

Still missing you so much and keep thinking I should ring you to tell you what's happening. Mo said it was the same when her mother died, you just can't get out of the habit.

So many things I'm coming across that I'd love to know what they mean, where they came from and the history of them, but too late now I'm afraid. You kept them very well hidden!

Well, its's your birthday today and you would have been 95. I'm sure you know that Florrie passed away exactly 2 weeks after you so that's the last of your generation, sadly to say. Veronica has become a good friend of ours - she was so wonderful in taking care of Florrie in her later years.

We scattered yours, dad's and Florrie's ashes all together on a lovely warm and sunny morning earlier this month, at Bognor, of course - where else would you want to be.

Even though we didn't want you to go it was your time and you were not well. You went so peacefully and I'm so glad I was there with you, holding your hand.

Miss you lots
Love you lots
Love Barbara

I like to think of Elsie, this special lady, reunited with Ben. Elsie had a wicked sense of humour and always told it as it was. I will really miss my trips to see her. I loved her and will treasure over 50 years of memories. Love Frankie
