Dad

You go through life taking your loved ones for granted. When somebody like your dad passes away there’s a big hole that is left. He had always been there and now he’s gone. That constant in your life.

Dad was such a thoughtful man, especially once he retired and had more time from the stresses and strains of work. We became much closer, especially when he was diagnosed. You take stock of things and realise what is important.

He was a strong man and took his diagnosis so well. I never once heard him complain even up to his last few days. There was always a cheeky smile and some humour.

Together we had a lot of fun, I would arrive to the bungalow with an invite to sit in the garden with him and have a G&T. That was our thing, being the ones who always liked a tipple or two! We also spent many a Friday evening getting all his vinyl out and listening to all our favourite music. Of course Bob Dylan had to always come out and he would chuckle knowing how much I didn’t appreciate his singing voice but always the lyrics would get to you. Bob Dylan was a fantastic song writer and dad appreciated all his lyrics proving how sensitive he actually was.

Over the last ten years I forced my cuddles and kisses onto him which I know he loved in the end and he would laugh when I smothered him with them.
He had a great relationship with Dylan. They would spend hours putting the world to rights whilst drinking port of an evening. We had plans of doing so much with mum and dad in their retirement but sadly those times were taken from us because of his diagnosis and we were all very sad about that.

He was extremely proud of Liam and Callum and everything that they’ve achieved so far and enjoyed all the family get togethers, especially at Christmas time.

I have one of the hardest things to get through and that’s my first ever birthday without my dad. The first card without Mum & Dad, the first present bought without my dad and the first birthday celebration without him.

I love Dad very much and life will not be the same without him but I’m happy knowing he’s not far away.

Love you forever Papa Bear from your Lily Bear.
