Terry Edward Sommerfeld

Terry Edward Sommerfeld

13.05.1946 - 26.03.2020

Terry was born in Canada, a twin brother to Barry. The family came to the UK when he was four years old and only briefly returned to Canada as a young man for about two years. He also lived in South Africa for six years and met Wanda at work at the age of fifty seven years old – he had been a confirmed bachelor! Terry and Wanda married on 22 May 2004 and finally settled in Dorchester Dorset. Terry was a very keen metal detectorist and spent many a day in the fields and pondering over his finds with his detectorist friends or at the Weymouth and Portland Metal Detecting Club. His knowledge of history and the coins and artefacts that he found was second to none. He loved Wanda’s children and their families and had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, Henry and little Ada. He especially loved the family get togethers at Christmas time and the many family lunches they had at Carluccios. He was the most loving, kind, thoughtful and generous husband, stepfather, grandfather and friend – he will greatly missed by all who knew him for a long time to come.

Cousin Terry from Geoff & Steve Harwood

Terry was our Mothers sister Joyce’s Son along with his twin brother Barry. Gordon, their Dad was Canadian and met Joyce when in England during the Second World War and the rest as they say is history.

Growing up in post war South East London we would meet up on a regular basis to play but Gordon & Joyce wanted greener surroundings for their Children and moved to Three Bridges in Sussex. We used to visit and can remember how lucky the boys were having the countryside on their doorstep. Terry had a huge collection of birds eggs, all very neatly stored is special drawers and labelled, this was at a time when bird egg collecting wasn’t frowned upon, It sounds like Terry was just as well organised with his much more recent hobby of metal detecting.

Terry was a wonderful Son to both Gordon & Joyce, especially in their latter years and following their passing would telephone our Mum, always Auntie Nora to Terry, with his news and plans. She would treasure these calls and Terry would tell her she was his second Mum.

We will treasure our memories, knowing that Terry found the love of a second ‘family’ through Wanda. Rest in peace mate.

Geoff & Steve Harwood and families.
